Cash injection for Northumberland housing
Northumberland will receive an extra £5.8m from the Homes and Communities Agency to deliver over 100 new affordable homes.

(Officers and councillors from Homes for Northumberland, Northumberland County Council and the Homes and Communities Agency examine the plans for 22 new homes at Allendale)
Following a regional allocation process, the National Affordable Housing Programme (NAHP) will support an local Arms Length Management Organisation and four Registered Social Landlords in the region to deliver 63 new homes for social rent and 40 low cost home ownership properties in rural areas such as Allendale, Seahouses, Norham, Tweedmouth and Beadnell and the coalfield area of East Ashington.
Allendale is one of the chosen rural communities that will benefit from 22 new affordable homes. The land chosen for development has been gifted to Homes for Northumberland from Northumberland County Council.
Northumberland County Council working in conjunction with Homes for Northumberland and the Homes and Communities Agency will deliver much-needed properties that will provide one third of the identified need in the area.
Ray Boycott, Managing Director, Homes for Northumberland said “We are delighted to have received this essential investment from the Homes and Communities Agency. This represents a significant milestone for us, as it will be our first new development scheme since our launch in April this year. We are committed to creating homes and neighbourhoods that people will be proud of and the funding will allow us to move forward to deliver these much-needed homes for local residents on behalf of Northumberland County Council.”
The scheme will be for local people in housing need and will include a small number of shared ownership houses to help local people who don’t want social rented housing.
“This development for 22 homes goes a long way to meeting the need for 75 affordable homes that the Council has identified. Working in partnership with the HCA and Homes for Northumberland, the Council is committed to ensuring there is a suitable mix of affordable homes and is prepared to consider borrowing money to match the funding provided from the HCA. The scheme is still subject to planning permission but I am pleased that we have taken the first steps to delivery.” says Jeff Reid, Leader of Northumberland County Council
The extra money for new, affordable housing is part of £40m allocated to the North East over the next three years, from the Government’s Housing Pledge – Building Britain’s Future – announced earlier this year.
Pat Ritchie, regional director of the Homes and Communities Agency in the North East, welcomes the NAHP funding saying “This regional allocation of additional funding provides a significant boost for affordable housing in the North East. The programme gives Arms Length Management Organisations (ALMOS) like Homes for Northumberland, and RSLs the opportunity to deliver quality, affordable homes for local people, where they would like to live and can afford to do so.
“One of our key responsibilities in the North-East is investing in rural and coalfield areas to address the problems of housing affordability and community sustainability. We look forward to working closely with our partners in the Northumberland area to deliver quality affordable housing for the local residents.”
