Reduced energy costs at Hartley Court
Homes for Northumberland have taken steps to reduce carbon emissions at a sheltered unit, Hartley Court which houses 30 flats in New Hartley.
The sheltered accommodation has had its central heating boilers replaced with new high efficiency gas fired units. Work will also include an array of solar panels which will be installed by the beginning of February. These panels are designed to produce an element of free energy which will provide hot water for residents in the building.
Hartley Court is the second sheltered unit to benefit from renewable technologies; Bob Elliot House recently had a new combined heat and power (CHP) unit installed, generating ‘free’ electricity to corridor lighting. The combined investment for both units is in the region of £250,000 and the new installations to these two buildings are helping Homes for Northumberland and Northumberland County Council reduce CO2 emissions and at the same time saving heating/energy costs for elderly residents.
The heating installations at Bob Elliott and Hartley Court were completed on the 8th of January 2010.

The project at Hartley Court is a two pronged attack helping to save money on heating costs as well as making a significant contribution towards reducing CO2 emissions.
Coupled with the heating upgrade and CHP unit installation at Bob Elliott House, a conservative estimated reduction of 123,500kg of carbon dioxide emissions per year will be achieved due to the more efficient equipment and renewable energies being used.”
